Living Out Loud
Thank you for allowing Mended Hearts, Chapter 16, to occupy space in your fine magazine. It was a wonderful article on Mended Hearts about who we are and what we do.
As members, we are aware of the impact we can have on heart patients and families as they travel from surgery to recovery. Most people are unaware that depression can set in and be devastating. Talking as someone who has been through a heart procedure, [it] can go a long ways toward recovery.
We are not bragging or complaining but we can say [to heart patients], “We have been there and done that.” We are living examples of a great and happy life. A heart procedure is not the end, but a new beginning. After I had my heart surgery in 1999, I recalled my grandmother saying, “You cannot alter the wind, but you can adjust your sails.”
We are living our motto: “It’s Great to Be Alive and to Help Others.”
