Oh, Christmas Tree! Five Christmas Tree Farms Within 50 Miles of Lynchburg

Scenes in books and movies have been inspired by experiences had at Christmas Tree Farms, let alone countless family traditions. This year, Lynchburg Living is making it easy to find a tree farm nearby that allows you to “choose and cut” your own. We went straight to the source–the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association–for all the know-how you need on five farms within an hour’s drive of Lynchburg. Read on and let the traditions grow strong as the trees come a-tumblin’ down.

Choose and Cut Christmas Trees:

Piney Mountain Christmas Tree Farm is located in Appomattox County, where the Bowmans have been growing Christmas trees for the past 29 years. Tree heights range from 6 to 8 feet with plenty to choose from on this 13-acre farm. The staff helps to cut and load your tree. All needed supplies are furnished. Fresh wreaths for sale are made on-site.

Hours
Each weekend after Thanksgiving until the weekend before Christmas.

Friday: 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday: 1 to 5 p.m.

Other times by appointment.

Located on eight picturesque acres in Rockbridge County, Ridge Road Ranch is a family-owned and operated “choose and cut” Christmas tree farm. In 1982, the owners planted the first crop of white pines, but over the years have expanded the variety of planting to include Scotch, Concolor, Canaan and Norway Spruce. “Everyone seems to be growing Fraser Firs, so we wanted to offer something different to keep up with the competition,” owner David Grant said.

Bow saws are provided and netting and twine is available. Dogs are welcome if on a leash.

Sunday: 1 to 4:30 p.m.

For the past 32 years, J & J Treeland in Central Virginia near Farmville, has been a wholesale and cut-your-own Christmas tree and wreath-making operation. “We have big trees,” owner John Young boasted of their offerings of 12- to 13-foot trees. “Some people like big trees and they can be hard to find but we have them!” J & J Treeland also manufactures fresh evergreen wreaths made from a variety of materials, including boxwood, pine and fir. Every year, they supply some of the wreaths hanging at the governor’s mansion in Colonial Williamsburg. J & J Treeland also offers hay, wagon and tractor rides. Netting and twine available.

Open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from first weekend after Thanksgiving until the day after Christmas. Sunday: Noon to 5 p.m.

The staff at Piedmont Tree Farm enjoys working with customers on a one-to-one basis and takes great pride in growing quality, fresh Christmas trees.
