Congrats on the “Royal Romance” feature in the March/April issue. It was very sophisticated and well photographed. Having looked carefully at the article, I went to the acknowledgments to select a photographer for my son’s senior pictures. I use several of the vendors that you featured including Spa 4109. I am happy that Lynchburg is attracting this level of talent. I am glad that YOU are here to call attention to them!

I just finished reading your latest issue on weddings and marriage. I wish to express my concern at the implicit message this particular issue (March/April) communicated via your imagery. As you turn the pages, it is apparent that there is a mono-racial tone to the featured content. I realize that previous issues have included featured stories of non-white persons, but in the latest issue that focuses on the key human institution of marriage, minorities are the out-group.

Where is an Asian who reads this issue of Lynchburg Living supposed to see themselves? African-Americans are represented in the issue, but only in the commercial advertisements (what shocking implicit message does this convey?). I am not asking the editors of Lynchburg Living to include “token minorities” in each publication. Rather, I would encourage you to critically evaluate the implicit messages you convey about fundamental human institutions and those collectives to whom you “give voice,” whether implicitly or explicitly.
